Wofford Football: Eli Campbell named SoCon and national Defensive Player of the Week

Spartanburg, SC. — Wofford defensive back Eli Campbell was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday and also earned Stats Perform FCS National Defensive Player of the Week honors after a takeaway filled performance in the Tdawgs’ 16-0 shutout at Elon.

Campbell, a senior from Sanford, Florida, finished with seven tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Each takeaway came in Elon territory. His first interception was a 35 yard return to the 4 that set up a second quarter field goal. Five of his seven tackles limited the Phoenix to four yards or less.

The shutout was Wofford’s first since 2016. Campbell’s work was part of a defense that forced five turnovers in the rain at Rhodes Stadium as the Terriers moved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon.

The SoCon honor is the first of Campbell’s career and the third weekly award for Wofford football this season. He is the first Terrier named a Stats Perform FCS National Player of the Week since Atkins Roberts in 2021. His two picks give him nine interceptions for his career, and the fumble recovery was the first of his career.

Wofford returns home Saturday, Oct. 17, for Homecoming against VMI at Gibbs Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM ET on ESPN+.
