Wofford volleyball is tied atop the Southern Conference at 5-0 with Tennessee Tech after sweeping Western Carolina 3-0 on Tuesday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers are 12-5 overall with a six match winning streak that has carried them from a choppy nonconference stretch into clear early control of the league.
The Old Gold and Black opened SoCon play by taking both matches at Chattanooga (Sept. 25-26), swept UNC Greensboro in a home weekend (Oct. 2-3), then finished off Western Carolina in three sets. Across those five conference matches Wofford is hitting .292 as a team while holding opponents to .166. Chloe Smith leads the conference surge with 74 kills and 4.35 kills per set. Bradley Brown has added 63 kills at a .427 clip in league play and 17.0 blocks. Laney Klika sits at 89 digs in SoCon action (5.24 per set).
Season leaders tell the same story over 17 matches. Smith has 244 kills (3.75 per set), 28 aces and 160 digs. Brown has 203 kills at .375 with a team high 59.0 blocks. Avery White has 120 kills. Natalie Arnold has 113 kills and is hitting .318. Setters Taylor Pecht (363 assists) and Maddy Frazier (356) have split the distribution load. Klika leads the digs race with 356 (5.48 per set) and ranks among the national leaders in total digs. Charlotte Bell has 46.0 blocks.
Non-conference results mixed high ceiling nights with tough power conference tests. Wins included Winthrop, Davidson, Presbyterian, Charlotte, George Washington, Clemson and Gardner Webb. Losses came against NC State, Coastal Carolina, South Carolina, High Point and Wake Forest. The Clemson win on Sept. 13 was a signature home result in a four set scrap. By the time league play started the Tdawgs had already faced a Power Five slate and were very much battle tested.
Tennessee Tech matches that 5-0 SoCon mark at 9-8 overall, so the regular season race is a two team chase for now. Samford sits third at 4-1. Mercer is 3-2. The rest of the league trails. Wofford is chasing a fourth straight SoCon Tournament championship under head coach Lynze Roos, with the tournament set for Nov. 19-22 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville.
Next up is a four match road swing. The Terriers visit Samford on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 9-10), then ETSU on Oct. 16-17. Home dates against The Citadel (Oct. 22-23) follow, with a midweek return to Cullowhee on Oct. 27 before Mercer, Furman and Tennessee Tech close the regular season at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
