Wofford beats Gardner-Webb 17-13 in a defensive slugfest where the Terrier defense’s bend, don’t break mentality gave the home team the win to move to 2-0 on the season. Wofford moves to 22-8 all-time against the Runnin’ Bulldogs and has won 6 straight in the series dating back to 2015.

Wofford started the scoring with an incredible 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by WR Ivory Aikens, followed by a Gerald Modest Jr TD run late in the 2nd quarter. While the Terriers took a 14-3 lead into halftime, after a lengthy weather delay at halftime on one of the hottest days in Gibbs Stadium history, Gardner-Webb came out in the second half looking to pull off the upset. The Wofford defense held the line despite multiple Gardner-Webb drives into Wofford territory, the last of which ended on LB Alijah Williams’ game sealing interception with only 28 seconds remaining on Wofford’s 15-yard line.

Wofford Star RB Gerald Modest Jr was his usual self, finishing with 85 yards on 20 carries and a TD, along with 1 reception for 9 yards. WR Colby Alexander & TE Jack Ewell led the way catching passes from QB JT Fayard, with 1 catch for 35 yards and 3 catches for 34 yards respectively. WR Terrance Honeywood finished with 2 catches for 26 yards.

Defensively, LB Elijah Washington led the way with 8 tackles including 4 solo for the Terriers, along with 1 TFL. A group of Terriers followed after Washington. LB Javario Tinch finished with 6 tackles & 1 TFL. LB Wyatt Ward also had 6 tackles, 1 TFL & 1 PD. DB Jacobi Hatter finished with 6 tackles and 1 PD. The Terriers defense finished with 8 total TFL’s and 1 sack, along with 5 PD’s.

Wofford (2-0) will travel to FBS Kent State (0-1) on a 6-game win streak dating back to last season, good for the 4th longest win streak in the nation. Kickoff next Saturday against the Golden Flashes at 12 PM ET, streaming on ESPN+.
