Terriers lose 2nd straight, falling to UNCG in Greensboro, 99-89

Wofford dropped their second straight game in SoCon play, falling to 17-10 (9-5) on the season, after falling behind early in the contest and never seeming to be able to get over the hump to take the lead, despite several different pushes to make it a two possession game.

UNCG was extremely hot shooting, similar to the Samford Bulldogs during Wofford’s midweek game, and it became too much for the Terriers to catch up after starting the game in a 17-4 hole.

Although the Terriers lost, the game was not without some positive developments. The away dogs saw another double-double from Nils Machoski with 24 points, 13 rebounds, & 3 assists. Freshman guard Max Ortega finished with a career-high 19 points, 2 rebounds & 2 assists. Cayden Vasko finished with 16 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists & a steal.

Wofford looked exhausted pretty much from the outset in this one, a product of the Terriers missing 3 starters who coincidentally are the only 3 returning players on the roster, including leading scorer Kahmare Holmes, Luke Flynn & Cannon Richards. Kahmare is expected to be back soon but the coaching staff has given no clear ETA on when that will be.

Beyond Kahmare, Luke Flynn who had been the starter for the Terriers all season at PG, has been out for an extended period. He saw 7 minutes in both the VMI & Western Carolina games, but did not quite look himself on the floor. He was very visibly frustrated during that Western Carolina game, as he sat on the bench down the stretch, with a towel cover his face. It is unclear if he further tweaked that injury during that game, but we have reached out to learn more.

PF Cannon Richards, the last of the three returning players to this seasons team, is out for the season after a gruesome injury in Game 2 against Milwaukee. He will not return until next season.

Wofford will look to bounce back against a struggling VMI team at home on Wednesday night, before a primetime matchup against arch-rival Furman this Saturday.

Wofford current sits two games back from first-place ETSU with 4 games to play, in a tie for second with Mercer. That said, the Terriers will need to be careful not to let their current skid continue, as while they currently sit in 2nd, they are also only 1 game in front of the current 6th place team in the standings.
