Spartanburg, SC – Wofford wins a thriller against Mercer in JRIS with a final score of 80-77 as the Terriers got revenge from their first matchup earlier this season. The environment was electric for a game that was rescheduled to 11 AM due to inclement weather. This marks the 3rd straight game that the Terriers have gone into halftime trailing but won the game, as the Terriers were down 7 today at half before battling back after the break.
Kahmare “Money Mari” Holmes was his usual self, with an insane stat line of 27 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, a steal and a block. Nils Machowski followed in scoring with 18 points of his own, along with 5 rebounds, an assist and a block. Both Terriers have been on fire in conference play, and both seem to be locks for All-SoCon honors and in contention for SoCon Player of the Year.
True freshman Chace Watley has become an integral part of the Terriers line up with 14 points, 7 rebounds and an assist, including two game sealing free throws with 30 seconds remaining and to put the Terriers up by 3. Another true freshman that has become a key component for Wofford’s success is Brian Sumpter, who scored 10 points, with 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and an assist. His biggest contribution however came on the defensive end, holding Mercer Star C Armani Mighty to 5 points in the contest.
Brendan Rigsbee continues to see increased minutes, scoring 6 points of his own along with 3 rebounds, including a dazzling spin move below the basket for an easy bucket which sent Terrier fans in attendance into a frenzy. Cayden Vasko has turned into the defacto emotional leader of the team, wearing his heart on his sleeve on the court and firing up the crowd. He missed much of the first half with foul trouble, but finished with 5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
We are still working to get an update for Terrier fans on the status of Sophomore guard Luke Flynn, who has been out with injury the past three games. Wofford coaching staff was hopeful initially that he would return later this season, and SHD’s is told he has no ligament damage.
Wofford moves to 14-7 (6-2) on the season, and sits in sole possession of second place in the conference standings behind ETSU (7-1). The Terriers will face ETSU twice later this season.
Wofford is now 18-8 against Mercer since they joined the conference in 2014, and 19-11 all-time including 11-3 at home.
Kevin Giltner’s squad will take on Chattanooga on the road this coming Thursday night at 7 PM. The Tdawgs will be looking for back to back revenge game wins, with the Mocs being their only other SoCon loss this season.
