Wofford annihilated Chattanooga 81-55 in McKenzie arena on Thursday night, avenging their prior season loss to the Mocs and winning their 4th straight game. The Terriers move to 15-7 (7-2) and are now tied for first place in the Southern Conference ahead of their matchup with ETSU on Saturday for first place outright. Wofford ended a 7-game losing skid to the Mocs with the win, dating back to March 2023.
Five Terriers scored double figures in a game that Wofford took over in the first half and never their foot off the gas. The Tdawgs dominated the game in every facet, holding the Mocs to 34% shooting (23% from 3-pt) and out rebounding the home team 49-36.
Nils Machowski recorded a double-double, with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a gnarly trailing block on a Chattanooga fast break. Chace Watley and Kahmare Holmes led the team with 14 points a piece. Watley added 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal, while Holmes finished with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals before leaving the game early in the second half with an ankle injury.
Cayden “CASHKO” Vasko had 11 points with 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal, including a MEAN poster dunk over Chattanooga big man Josh Bowman. Brendan Rigsbee had his best game of the season with 10 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds, including a very impressive reverse layup, completing the and-1.
Rex Sterling (aka The Big Thunder from Down Under) finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Brian Sumpter made his presence known down low with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.
Early returns on the severity of Kahmare’s injury were positive, but as always it is a wait and see approach for the Terriers who have now seen all three returning players from last year’s team go down with an injury. Cannon Richards is out for the season with a knee injury, while Luke Flynn has missed 4 straight games after suffering an ankle injury in the first matchup with Chattanooga.
Barring inclement weather conditions, Wofford will face ETSU on Saturday at 2 PM in JRIS for outright first place in the SoCon. The game will be nationally televised on @cbssports.
